The misconception is common: “If it’s light, it must be weak.” That’s true for poorly designed products, but not for thoughtful engineering. Flippouch weighs just 45 grams fully loaded. To put that in perspective, a standard golf ball weighs 46 grams. Yet our lightweight wallet can survive being run over by a car (we tested it).
How we removed weight without removing strength.
The key is using materials with high specific strength – strength divided by density. Aluminum 7075 has a specific strength of 207 kN·m/kg. Steel, despite being stronger overall, has a specific strength of only 77 kN·m/kg because it’s much denser. For a given weight, aluminum is actually stronger than steel.
We CNC‑machine the frame from solid aluminum, then remove any material that isn’t structurally necessary. The internal arms have cutouts – holes that reduce weight but don’t affect stiffness because the stress flows around them. This is called topology optimization. The result: a frame that weighs 12 grams but supports 50 kg of static load.
The hinge: tiny but mighty.
The hinge mechanism has six hardened steel pins. Steel is heavy, but we use the smallest possible diameter – 2mm. Each pin weighs 0.1 grams. Six pins total 0.6 grams. That’s negligible. The bearing washers are POM plastic, which weighs almost nothing (density 1.4 g/cm³).
Leather: thin but durable.
Full‑grain leather is strong even at thin thicknesses. We use 1.2mm leather – thinner than a typical bifold (1.8‑2.0mm) but still robust. Because it’s full‑grain, the surface is intact and resists tearing. Vegetable tanning also makes the leather denser than chrome‑tanned leather.
The modular accessories.
The cash clip is made of spring steel – just 0.4mm thick. It weighs 4 grams but can hold a stack of 10 bills securely. The optional pouch is made of the same 1.2mm leather and adds 8 grams. The money clip version weighs 3 grams. All are lightweight individually.
Why weight matters for EDC.
Every gram in your pocket adds fatigue over a day. A heavy wallet (120g+) can cause lower back strain if carried in a back pocket. It can also stretch out front pocket seams. Flippouch’s 45g weight is barely perceptible. You’ll forget it’s there – until you need to fan open your cards.
Comparing to competitors.
Traditional leather bifold: 90‑110g
Metal RFID block wallet: 120‑150g
Flippouch: around 86g (including cash clip and 4 cards)
That’s half the weight of a traditional wallet, and one‑third the weight of many metal wallets.
For EDC gifts for men and EDC gifts for women.
A lightweight cardholder is a gift that keeps giving. It doesn’t pull down dress pants, doesn’t bulge in slim jeans, and doesn’t cause back pain. And because it’s built to last, you’re not sacrificing durability.
Flippouch proves that lightweight and strong can coexist. The fan‑open mechanism reveals more surface area of each card while the whole package disappears in your hand. That’s engineering without compromise.
